The goal of the Rutgers University’s iJOBS Program (interdisciplinary Job Opportunities for Biomedical Scientists) is to expose biomedical PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to the large variety of non-academic career options as well as give them skills useful for academic careers. iJOBS is funded by a grant from the NIH Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training initiative and was established in January 2015 to serve the graduate students and postdocs at both the New Brunswick/Piscataway and Newark Rutgers campuses. There are 4 phases of the iJOBS program. Phase 1, iNQUIRE, is open to anyone who wants to participate and consists of career panels covering a range of career paths including, among others, Science and Health Policy, Intellectual Property Management, Industrial Development & Business Management, Clinical and Regulatory Testing Support, Health & Science Data Analysis, Science Writing, Non-profit Organizations, Publishing, Science Education, and Finance. Trainees also can participate in site visits to industrial partners, networking sessions with professionals, and workshops. SciPhD is an intensive workshop offered over five Sundays focused on enhancing communication, leadership, teamwork, business, negotiation and project management skills. In Phase 2, iNITIATE, trainees formally commit to the iJOBS program and apply to take part in intensive training and coursework for their career track of choice. Industrial partners demonstrate the career’s practical side with hosting of shadowing and mentoring activities. Throughout, individual development plans document the journey and a mentor pod guides and advises trainee progress. Within Phase 3, iMPLEMENT, resume and application packages are honed and interview skills perfected with iJOBS training and coaching. Focused career fairs showcase suitable career opportunities and provide industrial partners access to these professionally competent candidates. Upon successful career placement, iJOBS program alumni are encouraged to share their wisdom with new iJOBS trainees in Phase 4, iNSTRUCT as they serve as mentors, event hosts and shadow partners.

Brief description of Phase 2: The career panels, site visits and workshops that constitute Phase 1 will continue next Fall and we hope you continue to participate in them actively. If you are also interested in getting more involved in iJOBS to pursue ~72 hours of shadowing a professional in your area of interest and taking a course or certificate that will complement your scientific background with new knowledge, as well as being assigned a mentor for professional development, we have opened Phase 2 applications for students and postdocs.

Phase 2 applications require at least 12 hours of Phase 1 activities, a personal statement, permission from your PI, and a letter of recommendation from your PI or another faculty member with whom you have a long-standing relationship. Applications are open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Graduate students must be in good academic standing (GPA > 3.0) and have completed the proposition qualifier by Fall 2020 to apply. Applications are due by May 5 and admissions decisions will be made by June 5. Please follow instructions carefully on the attached application. FAQ as well as examples of courses (green highlighted courses on each tab in spreadsheet are ones previously taken by Phase 2 trainees) should address questions that you might have. Phase 2 for 2020 will start in September although with the caveat that course selection may be limited to what is available tuition-free and shadowing will be dependent on the operating status of various companies and Rutgers in the Fall.

GSBS is proud to offer a new course in Communicating Science which is funded by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

We envision our Ph.D. graduates able to speak and write about their research accurately and clearly to scientific colleagues, as well as non-scientists. Unfortunately, time spent learning to communicate their research pales in comparison to time spent learning how to design and conduct their research. A major goal of Communicating Science is to instill in students an advanced ability to not only to communicate clearly, accurately, and vividly about their research, but also to emphasize its significance. This course provides methods of instruction and improvisation to reinforce communication skills obtained in basic courses. It provides our trainees with new ways to communicate more effectively so they can apply these skills to diverse audiences and in different career settings. The course brings together a multidisciplinary faculty of scientists, educators, communication experts, and theater arts professionals from academe and industry to teach, improve, and assess advanced communication skills in our Ph.D. trainees. The course includes elements of didactic and improvisation content with built in opportunities to create and practice written and oral presentations for diverse audiences.

Rapid advances in methods, analyses and modeling complicate the task faced by researchers across disciplines who must produce clear and coherent scholarly articles that communicate complex material accurately and effectively. Rutgers Pre-doc Leadership Development Institute (PLDI)
Each year, the PLDI welcomes a select group of Rutgers doctoral students from a broad array of disciplines to its two-year program. Traditional discipline-based doctoral education is devoted to preparing students for careers in scholarship and teaching, but often these future faculty members complete their degree with little preparation for academic and administrative leadership roles in their institutions. The Joint Molecular Biosciences Graduate Student Association (JMBGSA)
The JMBGSA comprises Rutgers University students enrolled in the Graduate Programs in Molecular Biosciences through either the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School or the Graduate School New Brunswick. The Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University offers interdisciplinary fellowships that provide select Rutgers graduate students the opportunity to further their understanding of government, public affairs, and the practice of politics, and connect the fellowship experience to their chosen fields of study. Professional Science Master's Certificate in Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering
The Certificate in CDS&E is open to all graduate students in the sciences and engineering. Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E) is an intellectual discipline that brings together core areas of science and engineering, computer science, and computational and applied mathematics in a concerted effort to use cyberinfrastructure (CI) for scientific discovery and engineering innovations. The importance and immediacy of a multi-disciplinary research and technology program in CDS&E is highlighted by the increasing role of computational and data in aspects of science, engineering, business and society in the 21st century, and is accentuated by trends in CI (e.g., disruptive hardware trends, ever-increasing data volumes, complex application structures and behaviors, and emerging first-order concerns such as fault-tolerance and energy efficiency). The Graduate Certificate in CDS&E is a cross-disciplinary graduate program administered by the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2) and the Professional Science Master's Program. The goal of the program is to provide the necessary structures, learning opportunities, and experiences, beyond the more traditional university curriculum, that are necessary to drive science, engineering and business using advance in CI. The program will provide an overlay on the existing curricular structures at Rutgers to give students a multidisciplinary experience, and will include foundational and applied courses spanning modeling and computation, algorithms, HPC, data management and analysis, visualization, software, and multidisciplinary collaborations.

Professional Science Master's Certificate in Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer
This certificate is open to all graduate students in the sciences and engineering, part-time students from industry, and post-doctoral fellows. Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer is an area that is crucial to the economic growth of our country. Overall this certificate will train students about protection, marketing, assessment, valuation, commercialization and monetization of IP assets. This certificate is for scientists and engineers who wish to transition into the Intellectual Property realm and pursue it as a career and also for those that are currently involved in the IP space in careers such as: patent agents, R& D managers, tech transfer managers, intellectual asset management (IAM) professionals, marketing managers, product inventors and developers, financial and accounting managers, IP contract managers. The Certificate will be awarded upon the successful completion of 12 credits. There are two options for curriculum depending upon the applicants' background and experience in consultation with the certificate advisor(s).

Anatomy Instruction Certificate
The Anatomy Instruction Certificate Program is designed for graduate students who desire admissions into medical schools or for individuals who would like to be proficient in gross anatomy instruction. The students will attend the first year medical school classes and laboratories and will take examinations with the medical students. Upon successful completion of the certificate program students who have undergone the curriculum for a certificate in teaching program will be prepared to teach gross anatomy in colleges, universities and in medical schools.

Certificate in Medical Physics
This program is designed for students without an accredited medical physics graduate degree seeking to enter the field of medical physics. It has long been recognized within the profession that many potential medical physicists may have already completed or mostly completed their graduate education before considering a career in medical physics. For such people, the certificate program offers a path to the profession by satisfying coursework requirements for entering an accredited medical physics residency, an essential step towards eventual board-certification and becoming a practicing medical physicist.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has a great website that gives information on biomedical careers in general and advice on job searching. It is also a popular job posting location.
